The Nob Hill-Highland
Districts of Central Avenue's Commercial & Cultural Corridor
and Historic Route 66 Scenic Byway The Nob Hill district is bounded by Girard Boulevard and the University of New Mexico to the west, Washington Street to the east. The commercial area is bounded by Monte Vista and Campus Boulevards and Copper Avenue to the north and by Silver Avenue to the south. The commercial and residential areas are covered by the Nob Hill Sector Development Plan, which should be consulted for development and design guidelines as well as local zoning requirements. The Nob Hill residential neighborhoods are bounded by Lomas Boulevard to the north and Garfield Street to the south. Most of the Monte Vista and College View subdivisions (the northeast segment of the district) have been designated an historic district on the State and National Registers. The Nob Hill Neighborhoods Association (NHNA) represents Nob Hill residents in community development and zoning variance requests. The residential/neighborhood association boundaries extend to Zuni Avenue to the south and Lomas Boulevard to the north. Commercially, the Highland area is important for its large collection of independent antiques & collectibles dealers (200+), many within three indoor malls. Culturally, the area is becoming known for the Hiland Theater Performing Arts Center, which houses Musical Theater Southwest and a black box theater. Some art and architecture studios and galleries have located there, due in part to affordable rents in the area.

Highland's
business district is adjacent to the major transit and commercial
node at San Mateo and Central, with two high-rise office buildings,
a Walmart Supercenter, Raley's supermarket, Hollywood Video store, a clinic,
two bank branches, two gas stations and a car
wash. The area around Highland High includes these recreational
facilities: public, year-round swimming pool, tennis courts, running
track, and playing fields.
